Impact of IRS 26-Section 180 Deduction at of land acquisition on Appraisers and Farm Managers
Speakers: David N. Sasseville, Ph.D. and Tony Hagen with Land & Leaf Data Labs
This seminar is designed to inform students of IRS 26 US Tax Code Section 180: Expenditures by Farmers for Fertilizer. This section of the tax code allows for landowners and/or operators to deduct the cost or acquisition of fertilizer, lime, ground limestone, marl, or other materials to enrich, neutralize, or condition land in farming. Students will gain knowledge on the process of utilizing the tax deduction, when the tax deduction can be applied, who can use the deduction, and how the deduction will affect buyer’s perspective on land values. Additionally, students will learn how to apply an adjustment to sales were the buyer has indicated they based buying decision on utilizing this deduction.
How Soil Health, Carbon and Crop/Soil Productivity Can Impact Value
Speaker: Anthony Bly
This seminar will discuss how various farming practices such as no-till, minimal till, and conventional tillage affects soil health, carbon, and crop productivity and how these practices can affect land values and rental rates. The purpose of the seminar is to increase the appraiser’s knowledge and competency in appraising rural properties.
Land Values and Rent Trends

This seminar will discuss the most recent South Dakota Agricultural Land Market Trends as reported by South Dakota State University. The South Dakota Agricultural Land Market Trends is an annual publication of surveyed data from across South Dakota. The report includes discussion of factors influencing buyer/seller decisions and positive/negative factors impacting farmland markets.
